It’s The Law
The Occupational Safety and Health Act was passed in 1970 “to assure safe and healthful working conditions for working men and women”. Originally focused on general industry, healthcare has drawn OSHA’s attention. In the late 80’s and early 90’s Bloodborne Pathogens, 2000’s Ergonomics, and more recently Workplace Violence.

Healthcare Worker Safety
Exposure to hazardous chemicals and drugs, infectious agents, physical hazards, electrical hazards, emergency response aspects is typical, so requirements are well defined and more easily addressed. If your practice “is a specialty known to have workplace violence or ergonomic exposure”, you face a unique challenge.
Today, OSHA does not have a standard specific to workplace violence and/or ergonomics but actively enforces under the General Duty Clause, Section 5(a)(1) of the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970. Employers are required to provide their employees with a place of employment that is “free from recognized hazards that are causing or are likely to cause death or serious physical harm.” YOU NEED A PLAN.
